Odometer motor question.. 200 1989

Well, I spent about an hour replacing the two plastic gears in my speedo to make my odometer work once again. Both of the gears that I used were in tact and *should have worked.* My guess is that it's got to be the motor?

On to my question... When I unscrewed those two flathead screws to get access to the gears, as I took them off, the motor just fell out and onto the table. Is that how it's supposed to be? I was trying to figure out how in the world that motor was supposed to be getting power then. I looked at the small circuit board and saw a thin piece of bare copper exposed, as if when the motor was screwed on tight it would be getting power that way?

Anybody have knowledge about this? My car now shows 35 additional miles since I manually cranked it. heh.

Thanks!
