Air heater pipe question... 200

I've been driving my 245 without the air heater hose since it fell apart two years ago and my mechanic told me not to bother replacing it. After reading the "Air heater poll" post, I'm a little worried. Was I supposed to plug up one of the spots where the pipe connected?
