hi everyone,
after 8 years, i am finally the owner of a 164E.
my interest in these cars started at age 10, when a family friend bought one as a cheap old car to drive. though i made fun of it initially, deep down it had some kind of obscure appeal.... a few years later i was able to understand it, and i've wanted once since.
i'm a benz guy... and am restoring a 71 Rover 3500S and 58 Jag MkVIII... but today i bought a 1973 164E... for $50, advertised for $250 by a dealer. even i, who can see a car's hidden goodness, thought it to be a wreck... but having driven it, and having had a better look at it, i realized it had much potential.
i'm bringing it home on monday.
its manual... the ac blows some coolish air.... everything seems to work ok. no rust, aside from in front of the windscreen. engine pulls strongly but is tappety... hopefully can be adjusted satisfactorily. the clutch release bearing makes a barely audible noise... and the exhaust has a small hole. paint is looking sad, but its undracked and thick - a cut and polish will have it gleaming.
just wish it had the old door handles, cowbell bumper, and strip dash..... oh well. its the only manual 164E i've seen for sale in half way decent condition for years.
my dad drives a 1980 265 GLE... i've done a lot of work to it, and have driven it quite a bit, but honestly, it pales in comparison to the 164E..... and i really hope the 164E is more pleasant to work on than the 265 (with B23E).
anyway.... i will post again when i collect the car.. and will post pics.
my first question, is, however..... i want to fit a sunroof. can i use a complete 200 series roof?
