I've read of similar problems on this board but none specific to mine so here goes...I have a 1985 740GL with the ZF transmision. Love the car...hate the tranny. The tranny worked fine when I first put it in {from salvage yard}for about 5000 miles{can't be sure to the milage as the odometer doesn't work}. It started dropping out of 4th gear to 3rd gear as I would let off the gas to maintain speed. It only does this when the car has warmed up a bit.When driving while it is still cold it will go to 4th gear but as soon as I let off the gas it drops down to 3rd. I can sometime coax it back into 4th if I shift to neutral and back to drive while at speed but it will not stay in 4th. Eventually it won't go to 4th at all until allowed to cool off again and the whole thing starts all over again. I love the car but a rebuild is not feasable right now. Any cheap fixxes out there? The fluid and filter have been changed and are at the correct levels.
