partially full tank makes engine die? 200 1987

I am a Volvo newbie. I just bought 87 240GLE (thanks to those on forum who gave advice).

I've had two Volvo owners (or former owners) this week tell me that they've had problems with the engine stalling because of a fuel tank that is less than 1/3 full. (When they filled the tank the problem went away.)

Is this a typical problem? Does it indicate a weak fuel pump, or possibly inaccurate fuel gauges?

Thanks for any help . . .
