Temp. and Fuel Gauges Need a Rap to Register 700

I just bought a 90' 740 and have noticed (actually the seller told me) that if the gauges don't register, just tap the fuel gauge and they'll both register??? Sounds like a loose electrical connection, but where?????? Thanks.
