hard start, fuel gauge wacky. 700 1985

Hi everyone,
My 1985 744 likes to take 2 starts to start (at about 5 turns each try) or one exaushtingly long start. I have a new starter (2 months old)in there so i know it is not that. What is it?

Also, my fuel gauge likes to wave back and forth inconsistently while i am driving or when the pedal is pushed or moved. It makes it hard to tell exactly how much gas I have left. Are theese two symptoms related at all??

Any advice I really appreciate as i am new here,
