Dead and dying 200

Hey. Six week ago I bought my 86 240 DL wagon. I love this car, I've always wanted one. Anyway I took it to a mechanic who gave me a 4,000 dollar estimate on what needs to be done: tailgate harness ($345), steering rack ($745) transmission re-build ($1200), ect., ect. That's when I discovered this site and discovered I can fix the majority of this and save myself thousands of dollars. Okay, sorry the question: I'm blowing through steering fluid, how soon until the rack fails? I'm putting fluid in every other day now. My choices are:
A. Put a band aid on it. What is that band aid? Where can I get one?
B. Pay overpriced mechanic 745 dollars. Not possible, don't have it.
C. Trust an alcoholic, out of work mechanic brother of a co-worker to help me (based on the Bentley Manual) to deal with it. Pay him in beer. Possibility of him screwing it up, but repair would be only half price.
Thanks, guys and gals.
Next subject: What the hell's up with my transmission?
