740 strange engine noise 700 1985

Hello Volvo-folks Everywhere,

I have a 1985 740GL auto in generally great condition, but with all the usual getting-old problems (bit like it's owner). It is regularly serviced by me and well looked after, so the latest problem is a mystery. Coming from inside the engine is a noise which sounds much lke an old electric motor with dry bearings. If I use an automotive stethoscope and rest the end of the prod on the engine block when the engine is running, I can pinpoint the sound to (apparently) towards the bottom of the block, about three inches or so forward of the starter motor. The noise is consistent and whilst not very loud, it is quite noticeable from inside the car. Is it maybe the oil pump? If so, is there a common problem with 740 oil pumps? The oil pressure light doesn't come on, so the pressure is probably OK. Is it maybe some sort of baffle in the sump which is loose?

Whatever it is, can some kind Volvo Fundi help? I'd be most grateful.

Regards Fifi UK
