Turn on the lights / lose the instrument cluster lights 700

1985 740 gle wagon
Maybe somebody else has run into this. When I turn on the headlights I lose the instrument cluster lights. Gas gauge/temp/rpm/ speedometer still work but I can't see 'em. It's gotta be a wire somewhere - any help in the direction of that wire(s) would be greatly appreciated!
