ECUs are interchangeable--a gamble pays off 200

Earlier today I posted asking about intechangeable ECU numbers for 240s.

My car is a 1992 w/EGR, LH 2.4 and uses a 556 computer. I couldn't find a used 556 anywhere local, but a local car/parts dealer had a 561. He said it would work. I talked to two Volvo shops, the parts guru at the local dealer, coupla local junkyards, the archives here, several rebuilders, reviewed the parts listings for places like FCP Groton, etc...and I couldn't find a consensus whether a 561 would.

But the price was right ($150), the source had a good reputation, he said he took it from a wrecked 1991 that still ran, and I once bought a transmission from him that turned out to be real solid--so I took a chance.

It works. It works great. Car starts, idles, pulls, accelerates from a dead stop, all just like you would want.

I'll report in later whether the gas mileage is ok--but for now I gotta think this looks like an option for anyone whose 556 computer craters.
