What to look for when inspecting Failed fuel sendin unit. 700

I want to repair my fuel sending unit if possible as I have heard that it can be done. When I pull it out what should I look for. I have an '86 740 and it has the cylindrical type float chamber. I've already done a Jumper test, and the guage went to full so I assune it is the sender.
