Bad booster? 200

What usually malfunctions on a booster to make it go bad? Could it be as simple as the check valve or is it more likely a diaphram of some sort? I ask because the brkae pedal on my '81 242 is very hard and I don't recall feeling the pedal drop a bit after starting the engine. Thanks for any help. Adam.
