Electrical path from batt to coil? My Haynes diagram sucks 700 1988

Can anyone suggest a comprehensive trouble shooting procedure for going over the electrical path from the batt to the coil with a multimeter. I'm trying to find an intermittent problem that only occurs when the engine is cold and like I said my haynes diagram is less than easy to read.
