halfshafts--left and right 200

I read a post the other day indicating that the halfshafts on a 240 rear end are right and left side oriented...is this true? Are there any markings or any way of knowing which is which if one does not keep track of which side they came out of? What symptoms would appear if they are put in wrong? Thanks in advance for your input. Lanky
