K10042 speedo not interchangeable? 200 1989

I tried swapping a 1986 K10042 speedo into my '89 244. My cluster did not like it all at. A friend let me borrow it and said it was in good working condition (bad odometer). After I plugged in the '86 speedo, I got no lights, no tach, nothing. Though, interestingly enough the only thing that did light up was the overdrive arrow.

I know that in '89 there's the service reset lever on the back of the head. However, I am successfully running a 1987 K10042 speedo which works great in my 1989 240 (bad odometer motor, not gears).

Has anyone successfully installed a 1986 speedo in a 1989 or newer 240? Or, do you know of any compatability issues?

Thanks...
