I thought I would just share my odometer story.

I had my odometer repaired by Continental Imports (Gainesville, FL) about 1.5 years ago for $125. It worked for 5000 miles, then broke.. then fixed, 1500 miles later, it broke... then fixed, and 45 miles later, it broke. It really broke, something flew apart inside the speedometer head and caused my needle to only function between 20-55mph. I ended up getting my $125 back.

After swapping out a couple of speedoheads, none of the odometers would ever work. I even tried the new gears that Continental replaced.

Anyway, a friend of mine sent me two speedometers, one from a 1986 sedan and also my original one. The 1986 wouldn't work in my cluster for some odd reason, hence my earlier post. With a little compressed air, a new needle (it broke during transit), a glossy black faceplate, and a set of different odometer gears, the thing works again! I manually wound the odometer by hand about 4000 miles to match what my old odometer read. I didn't want to push my luck by undoing the pin and freely rotating the numbers, so my odometer is about 10,000-15,000 miles behind... big deal.

The scariest part of the day... was when one of the wires from the side circuit board on the speedohead got disconnected from underneath the faceplate (after verifying that the odometer worked). I crammed that wire back in there with tweezers and a little force and reattached the face, smashing the wire down so it was tight. It appeared to work nicely. :-)

I can finally track my MPG again. I'd love to reset the trip odometer to 000 after each fill up, but "I ain't going near that lever."

What a great day... It took me 1.8 miles roundtrip to go buy a lottery ticket!
