'ticking' from engine S90-V90 1998

Since my warranty ran out I try to do all the work myself. I currently have what sounds like valves ticking away in my 98 S90's engine. I just checked the valve clearance in my 88 245 so I thought "no problem!". But I read in the manual that the valve clearance are set hydraulic-ly. (horrible spelling tonight) Isn't that an automatic thing? Or is that a dealer thing?
