Which octane rating gives the best mileage? 900 1991

I guess everyone has a different story but, which octane is giving you guys the best mileage? Downunder (NZ), we have 91, 96 and 98 octane. My 945 turbo occasionally pinged using 91 so I switched to 96 thinking it must be the octane rating . . . but is it?

Opinions, please?
