My wife came back from the store last night in our '86 740GLE wagon, turned it off in the driveway to unload, then tried to start it up a few minutes later. The engine turns over fine, but it will not start. This car has about 245K miles on it with the original drivetrain. A couple of months ago, we noticed that the fuel pump under the drivers side of the car was running all the time. Prior to that time, we didn't hear that pump unless the fuel level was very low. I was advised to replace the in-the-tank pump, which I did. I still could hear the pump under the car running all the time. Now I'm wondering if that pump has burned out or something. I'll check for spark when I get home from work, and I did note that the camshaft was still turning while trying to crank the engine over (so timing belt s/b ok). But I guess the fuel pump doesn't work with the key set to "on", the engine has to be running or something? How do you test for that if you can't get the engine to run? I'd appreciate any advice I can get, thanks!
