Voltmeter hook-up. Best location? 200 1990

Hi.

I have a voltmeter and I would like to know the best spot to to connect it in order to get the most accurate reading possible. The obvious to me is the battery but wondering if the alternator output is better? Could it be used occasionnaly from the cigarette lighter socket? or any other power source?
