Shep's Brick- An Update 200 1987

Hi folks!

I have just collected my 1987/88 240GL sedan that I bought on eBay. It seems to be fine at present (I drove it some 120 miles home after colecting it), but not perfect. It's a typical 15 year old car, which seems to have been quite well looked after.

The body is very blue and quite shiny, although it could do with a cut and polish and a few touch ins, especially around the edges of the doors. The interior is a bit grubby but is responding well to cleaning, and every electrical item works, including the seat heaters, windows headlight wipers and aerial.A voltmeter is present and correct below the clock, with a nice blanking panel over the radio aperture on the top of the dash. The radio/cassette, which the vendor has found for me, is a pukka 3 band Volvo Sound job with Dolby and auto reverse and is sited in the lower console. It doesn't work as I think the loom for it has either never been there or has been pushed behind the dash. Looks good though!

The engine and drive train are very strong, and the fuel consumption seems very low, considering the whole car needs a service. A new exhaust has been fitted, along with some quality front tires... The downsides are the fact that the windshield seal has shrunk and is leaking a bit and the very front top edge of the driver's rocker panel has a hole in it of about an inch in diameter, which is probably due to corrosion starting from the rocker panel's trim strip locating hole(I am not convinced that the addtional trim on the later models was a good idea...). It seems easily weldable and confined to just one area, as the floors, the rest of the rocker panels, the rear seat pan and trunk floor (I found a Haynes manual in there!) are rock solid. Just one of those things perhaps. I may leave it until the roadworthiness inspection in July unless it gets really bad. What say you? I don't care if the welding looks ugly as it can't be seen when the door is closed.

Driving the car is very relaxing. It accelerates and stops well. The power steering is very light, as are the rest of the controls, and you don't think you are going 70mph as the engine is so quiet.

I plan to treat this car as a 'rolling project' as I have decided to keep my other car as it has ben so good to me. I hope to keep one of them mobile just in case the other one goes down on me. I look forward to sampling the joys of a Brick over the next few months.

I hope that you can help and support me throughout this troubled time!:)
