Speedometer stopped working 700 1992

The speedometer on my '92 745 had been working on and off for the past few months. Now it stopped completely. Funny though the odometer is still working, and the speedo needle jumps when the car starts, which makes me to believe that is something electrical.

My question is: Is it possible for the speedo sensor unit to be defective and the odometer still working? I hate to buy a new speedo sensor only to find out something else is defective. Any one with any other ideas on something else that I should be checking.

Any hints are greatly appreciated.
