Ok, so I went down to the Machinist with my parts to try to explain to him why I want my kingpin bushings installed the way the volvo intended. The bushings have two grease channels, one half channel which comes from the grease hole and one long channel wich runs the entire length of the bushing. The manual states that the short chanels from the grease fittings should go outwards, towards the king pin end sealing caps. The mechanic said that on all of the kingpins he works on, the grease chanel goes towards the the roller bearing. He says that the roller bearing gets most of the stress in the joint (due to the vehicles weight) so the grease should go there. He said that "I must be smoking something" if I think the grease will actually travel outwards in the short channel to the sealing caps and then be pushed inwards along the full channels to push out the old grease and eventualy grease the roller bearing.
So who's right? I want to go with the original setup, I figure if I jack the car up that the grease system will work just great and I will be able to push out most of the old grease. But maybe some of you guys out there who have actually gone through a couple of kingpins might have some usefull thoughts.
