electric fan thermoswitch 700 1989

i am replacing the radiator in my '89 740Turbo. the new radiator has all the same connections as the old except the thermoswitch hole for the electric fan looks smaller and is not threaded as opposed to what is on the old radiator. i have not removed anything yet and wonder if there is an "insert?" or some adaptor that will come off the old one. or will i need to plug that hole and use an in hose switch.
