stalled and won't start- Help! 200 1987

My 245 87 (171000 miles) just did a 900 miles trip and has been running great. Tonight I stopped for a turning bus and suddenly my car stalled. I turned the key to off to start it, but instead of turning off it sounded like it wanted to start by itself and the dash lights were flickering. When I tried to start it, it turned over but would not start (like no gas was coming). I had to tow it to a gas station since my mechanic was closed for the day and I couldn't leave the car at his place. I know nothing about cars, but checked the fuses (the 25 amp one looked a little cruddy) and couldn't see anything wrong. The fuel pumps are new and I take the car in for service every 5000 miles. Since this is not my regular mechanic I need some advice so I have some idea of what he will be talking about tomorrow morning....... or should I bite the bullet and tow the car to my mechanic? Thanks for all suggestions!
