gas tank noise 700 1991

Can someone help with the anatomy of a gas tank?
My 1991 740 produces a rhythmic thumping noise from the gas tank when I come to a stop or bump lightly over a pothole or similar.
It sounds like there is something sloshing around in the tank.
This has been going on for six months or more, and I'm not having any problems with fuel starvation (thatI've noticed), so whatever it is it's not obstructing the fuel outlet.
My mechanic ( a volvo specialist) thinks its a baffle that's come adrift.
Anyone else got any brightideas?
