I just purchased a 1992 960 Volvo Wagon with 129000 miles for $2000. My 14 yr old plays ice hockey and I want a winter beater to rack up the miles on. It had sat at a used car lot for 1 year. It was buryied behind 3 rows of cars in the snow when I came to test drive it. They bought it at auction and know little of history. CarFAX says it was a dealer car when auctioned. It had 2 registered owners and no accidents. All the power stuff works. New rear brakes and "W" "S" "E" switch. Engine runs smooth on highway but at idle has an occassional shudder. Airfilter dirty so probably needs plugs and maybe coils as well. No exhaust leaks. No oil or coolant leaks. Body was decent for a New England car.
My only concern about the car is the transmission. Smooth shift to second but a major shudder of car going into 3rd(or lockup?)when I first started to drive it. It was less noticable the more I drove it. Could it be caused from sitting ad will it worK itself out?( I once bought a 1967 144 in 1975 which sat for 2yrs with an automatic that didn't want to shift appropriately for the 1st year I owned it) Could it be a relay or is it something to be really worried about?
