I obtained a 1989 740 GLE recently with 128k miles. I got it cheap as the head was cracked/warped. I picked up a 1990 16v engine and AW72 trans (they came out of the same car) and installed in the 1989. The new motor runs fine but the trans (auto) will not shift up into overdrive. It shift from 1st to 2nd to 3rd fine. I confirmend I have voltage at the solinoid (so relay is good). I can connect and disconnect the electrical pigtail from the solinoid and hear the solinoid click. But I replaced the solinoid antway with the one from the 1989 tranny and still no overdrive. When I was hooking up the new engine and trans in the car I found that the tranny kickdown cable was shorter than the original one. The amount of cable sticking out of the sheath on the 1990 tranny was less than the amount of cable sticking out of the sheath on the 1989. As a result I never hooked up the kickdown cable. What is the relationship with the kickdown cable and the overdrive. Can the kickdown cable not being connected be preventing the upshift into overdrive? A second question, how do you replace the kickdown cable? How do you access the tranny end of it?
