Hydrochloric Acid....... Useful Cleaning Aid for Plastic Reservoirs and Alloy Wheels

We've been using hydrochloric acid for some years to clean brake and coolant reservoirs. It works well in cleaning internal plastic chambers and we've had no problems. Vary the strength to meet the need but it can be used neat.

More care is needed when used on badly soiled alloy wheels, but the results have been excellent. It is necessary to lay the wheel flat and to work a small section at a time with a toothbrush or similar firm bristle brush. Have a hose handy and you MUST flush with plenty of water every 20secs or so. Trial a small area first. It is not advisable to clean the hub side of the wheel. Acid will flow through to the finished side and can etch without you being aware.

Precautions to avoid skin contact are necessary.Rubber gloves and eye protection are not a bad idea. Flush with water straight away if body contact is made.

I have not seen it's use suggested on Brickboard so thought it may be of help.

Take care,
John H from Downunder
