Is it possible to push start an automatic?

In days of yore in the U.K. and Hong Kong ,I and others used to push start(VW Beetle and Mini) manual trans car down a slope in neutral and then engage in gear to help start a car that would not start.
Is this possible with an automatic car in NA?Now that my auto cars are 10 and 12 yrs old.
