1800 FI replacement 1800

Greetings all,

It has been awhile since I have actively monitored the Brickboard. Life has gotten too much in the way lately.

Recently I started the restoration of the '72 1800ES acquired 2 1/2 years ago. The car has not been on the road since 1986, and the best guess is the engine has not been run since at least 1990. The engine needs to come out for a good going over, and maybe a rebuild/souping up. The body needs a lot of work, but there does not appear to be any significant cancer to deal with. The rocker panels will need replacement, the quarter panels look restorable, and the paint needs to be completely redone. I'm sure I will find plenty of skeletons as I go along. (Jack points look fine, and there is a good floor) I already know the entire suspension and brake systems need complete overhauls. Already have the lowering springs, IPD sway bars, SS brake hoses, all the bushings, etc.

The question I will dealing with soon concerns the fuel injection and the ignition. Replacing the old breaker point ignition with electronic ignition is a no brainer. The old Bosch Type D fuel injection is another question. Assuming it still works, or can be revived, can I rely on it? I know parts are available, but they can get costly if enough of them need replacement. (i.e., injectors are about $100 each, a rebuilt ECM is about $200, the pressure sensor is about $280, the pump is about $250, ...)

I am toying with the idea of replacing the FI with a more modern aftermarket system. It would be digital vs. analog, have better air mass measurement capability, programable, parts should be more readily available, should give better performance, and should be more reliable in the long run. Besides, there may be opportunities to tie in the ignition with the FI for better overall engine control. I hear the costs of such a system is in the $1200 to $1500 range for something decent. It does not take a whole lot the old Bosch parts to fail to approach this cost.

Has anyone out there done such a thing? Any experiences (+ or -) to share. What kind of costs were involved? Any suggested systems?

Thanks,

Gary D
