can I check my hall sensor out of the car? 700 1988

Gang, I yanked the distributor out of my 740GLE in an attempt to check out the Hall sensor and diagnose a no-start condition I have. The bracket was broken off the distributor, but none of the wires seemed damaged. The distributor is covered with oil, so I guess some seal changes are in order.

I'd like to be able to test the hall sensor out of the car if possible. Can I just hook up a 12V power supply to the unit and test it? I suppose the 12V supply would go the the + connector... and then by spinning the distributor, I would measure a second voltage at the middle terminal... does this make sense to do?

Also, should the distributor shaft wiggle at all? Mine seems to have developed a little play.

thanks in advance.

Mike
