Cleaning Exterior of Valve Cover - Old Finish Is Ugly 200 1981

I still have the intake manifold off my 81 242. While it's all apart and I'm cleaning everything, I figure might as well remove and clean the valve cover. Both the manifold and the valve cover, especially the valve cover, have this old yellowing finish on them. It looks like varnish or a plastic coating from the factory. At one time it probably looked good, but now it's pretty ugly. What's the best way to clean all this crud off down to bare metal and make it look good under the hood? Thanks in advance. DougC
