exhaust manifold warm air duct 700 1987

All,
I recently changed the distributor and accompanying components (cap, rotor, spark plug cables) as well as the power stage on my 307,000 mile 740 non-turbo wagon. In the process of changing the power stage (a mysterious part that has failed on me 3 times) I forgot to reattach the warm air duct that runs from the manifold to the air filter housing. The duct was destroyed when I moved the car. One mechanic told me the duct was an unessential part I'd need only if I lived in Alaska. So I've been driving around for about a week without it. Since then I've been getting poor gas milage and have noticed a lack of power when the engine is warm only. In heavy traffic the accelerator is completely 'dead' and the car crawls up to speed. I'm wondering if this has anything to do with the lack of the warm air duct or did I make some terrible mistake in my replacement of the distributor. Or is this completely unrelated?

Much thanks in advance.
LH
