Smog check 900 1992

I am a newcomer to this board.
Recently, I took my 92 940 (non-turbo) for smog check. It barely passed the examination. The mechanic said it will not pass the next time.
The engine has been tuned, timing has been adjusted, and air filter has been replaced. Where shall I tackle next. PVC valves? Any advise?
