rear seating light? 200 1987

I drive an '87 240 dl sedan.
I replaced a small light behind where the front seat belts insert which brighten the floor of the rear seats. Is this light suppose to turn off eventually. Mine stays on constantly. I don't remeber if it use to before the light burnt out or not. Should it stay on?
