My front wheel bearings are getting noisy. At least I think it
is wheel bearings -- it makes a wacky grinding noise at low speeds,
the sound changes as the car speeds up even with the motor off,
it changes a bit with the brakes and goes away when I turn the wheel
in one direction and gets louder if I turn it in the other direction.

I'm thinking of just getting a set from a 164 I've seen at a
junk yard. I might get it from a 142 instead if it has far fewer
miles on it. These seem like they shouldn't wear out and the only
reason mine did was because they were a bit loose and I never really
attended to the situation correctly. I can get new ones from
bimmerparts for $27 but I think the junk yard will be cheaper and
faster. It looks like the 140s and 240s used the same front wheel
bearings until 1980 or so -- is this correct?

I'm assuming I should clean off the old grease, clean up the
place where the old bearings went and install the new bearings and
races. If I remember correctly on one side on my car the races
just came out without much trouble the others didn't come out at
all -- should this have been a warning sign that I needed to replace
them then?

On the plus side I should get the 50% off rain discount if I time
stuff correctly tomorrow. Hopefully things don't get too rusty
with me taking them apart in the rain. I need to get my 122 out of
the garage...
