Volvo radio w/ equalizer 700

I attempted to add a Volvo equalizer to my 91 740 Turbo. It has the factory AM/FM cassette, model #CR-718. I plugged the equalizer into the corresponding jack, hooked up the ground and power source and turned radio on. The only sound audible is at full volume and then it is barely hearable. This goes for both radio and tape player. Did I fry something or do something wrong? Help! Any help would be greatly appreciated
