Platinum Plugs bad for Volvos?

I was told not to put platinum spark plugs in my '83 240 by a Volvo mechanic. He said they were "too hot" for the Volvos. Is that true?

I am just using the cheap resistor plugs now until I find out.

Please give me some input.
