Wiper Trouble With Diagnosis 200

Dear fellow brickers,
I have a '90 244. My wipers had a number of problems. First they wouldn't stop working after I turned them on until I turned the car off (or put the switch into a position btwn off and slow on. This was fixed after playing with the plastic gear in the assembly next to the motor. Now the wipers stop randomly. Sometimes a few inches from the bottom of the windsheild, sometimes in the middle. Is this a problem with the arm that connects the wipers or with the plastic white gear inside motor? Next, the intermittent wiper function is not working. The wipers work in slow mode when in the intermittent position. I have to turn off the wipers manually. Is this the switch or the intermittent relay. Is there any way to test?I have cleaned the contacts on the metal cover of the gearbox as suggested by previous threads, checked and replaced fuses. I am not very electrically inclined. The switch operates fine in non-intermittent modes (except for stopping all over the place) I once adjusted the position of the wiper stop by loosening the copper conection to the white plastic gear, pushing my wipers down and reattaching the gear to the copper contact. Did this damage the assembly? Can I find those gears aftermarket? My luck with salvaged parts is limited (mostly american cars around here) Any suggestions greatly appreciated. Thanks, Mate
