screwy tach

Anyone have any idea what has happened to my tach on a 91 740. With the ignition off, the needle falls all the way over to the right (7000rpm) instead of zero and with the engine running, it reads a constant 2800 no matter what the throttle position. It was fine one day and started this crap the next. Beats me. Any ideas much appreciated.
