What does M46 sound like when bearings are on the way out? 200

Hi. Have an '85 240 with the 4-speed overdrive transmission. Car has in excess of 250,000 miles on it, and recently the transmission has been making a horrid noise in second and third gears (most pronounced in 3rd). I'm really not sure how to describe this noise, but it sounds as though the transmission is "growling" at me. I've tried all kinds of trans. lube, including ATF, 10w30 motor oil, and Redline MTL. No difference whatsoever.

Time to start scouring the boneyards for a new (used) M46?
