Bad Gas mileage/Checking ECT 700

Hi all!

I have an '87 740 GLE wagon w/ B230F engine that is getting TERRIBLE gas mileage (about 10mpg). After reading the FAQ's, I am suspecting that the engine coolant temperature sensor (ECT) is suspect. I want to test it without ripping everything apart. My Haynes manual seems to have no information on dealing with this sensor whatsoever, unless I totally missed something. (Please correct me if I'm wrong)

The FAQ mentions checking voltage between pins #5 (-) and #13 (+) on the LH ECU at various stages of engine temperatures with the ECU intact. I don't seem to have any diagrams as to where this ECU is located, what it looks like, or where the best test points can be accessed. Can anybody shed some light on this?

Thanks!

-Mark
