Backetball hoop fell and broke off antenna. New antenna = poor reception, now what? 200 1992

After the falling basketball hoop broke it off, we put on one of the short rubber ones. Even though I am in SoCal with strong signals, I can barely get any stations, instead of dozens. I know with antennas, like some other things, the longer the better, but I find it hard to believe that the short one can't do better than it does. If I disconnect it completely, there a barely noticeable difference (goes from 15% reception to 10% reception, with the original antenna = 100%).

Any suggestions? Junk yard, off brand, or Volvo dealer? I think the dealer wants $$ but at this rate I am tempted. What should I look for if I go after market?

Another question: I didn't think the car originally had an electric antenna, but what is the female plug hanging around in the trunk beneath the antenna?

Thanks.
