Towing a 240 200 1992

Now's the time to ask this, before I need to know...

Recently I finally found a copy of the owner's manual for the 1992 I bought last year. In catching up on its details, I noted that it warned against towing using hooks and slings. It said to use only a platform truck or one that lifts the wheels.

Hmmmm. Didn't say anything like this in the book for my 1980. Of course, back then there wasn't any kind of tow truck but the hook.

Since the 1992 is an auto, I assume it should be towed from the rear. Probably the valence under the bumper would need to come off, but otherwise it looks pretty much identical with the 1980. What's changed during the 12 years that makes the newer models a risky tow? Is this warning just CYA for Volvo or are there real mechanical issues here?

Thanks for any help you can give.

Doug Harvey
