This is my first post as we have only just had a Volvo join the family.
My 17 year old son (with my sponsorship) just bought an '84 760GLE V6 (B28E) sedan as his first car. The odometer no longer works and rests peacefully at 185,000km. Yeah! I can hear you telling me now about its possible problems (engine wiring harness, camshaft wear etc etc etc.)
Dad gets to make it run smooth of course and fix all of the possible problems.
I've replaced the engine wiring harness with one from Dave Barton (great guy and great service) and spent Boxing Day adjusting the valve tappet clearances. The camshaft surfaces look good but the oil contact surfaces are pretty discoloured. The oil itself is still very clean and had obviously been changed not long before the purchase.
I'm thinking of using an engine flush for the first oil change. This is to maintain as good a standard of oil flow as possible to the camshaft in future.
I've read elsewhere on the brickboard that some people have had oil blockage problems caused by flushing an old motor. Are these just isolated cases of bad luck or is this a no-no on an engine such as this one?
If there is a real risk I was thinking of reducing the flushing agent proportion and maybe running it for only 5 minutes, not the 15-20 minutes recommended by the flusher supplier. Then I may use some more the next time I change the oil and progressively increase the proportion until full strength is achieved. This sound safer to me. Any opinions or experiences would be most welcome.
Thanks in advance.
