OD Light will not go off. Researched the boards for hours, can't find the answer. 200 1987

These message boards are absolutely awesome!!
It's neat to enter into a world where what is "new" are the owners, while the cars themselves go on pretty much unchanged . . .

That being said, I'm the "new" owner of an 87 200DL with 143k on it.
It has a 3 speed Automatic transmission w/OD. (How do I find out what type?AW70/71?)
When the car first got me, the OD worked.
Now the light stays on all the time and it does not goe into overdrive.
Fluid is where it is suposed to be.
I've followed Don Foster's great advice and resoldered the relay.
The momentary switch in the gear shifter has continuity as does the grey line from that switch to the relay (#86)
Pushing the switch with the car on and in Drive does not actuate the relay (I left it uncovered to watch it's operation)
Manualy closing the relay contacts does little. (the OD indicator light dims slightly. ) It seems that there is more than one circuit that feeds that light.
If I float the relay contact (put paper on both sides of the contact) the lamp is still on, but slightly dimmer.

Sorry to bring up this much discussed subject, but I would be most appreciated if someone could see the answer.

Thanks in advance,
Tim
