ticking noise at top of engine, what is it? 900 1995

While working on the engine today I noticed a ticking noise...almost like a knocking sound at the top and center of the engine. Almost sounds like it is coming from under the black sparkplug/coil cover. Could have been there before and I just never noticed. Does the 960 normally make this kind of sound? I have no known problems that should give me any major concern with regards to the engine.
