lambda sond light 200 1980

1980 260 GLE w/Lambda Sond
i have some basic questions/concerns.
the 'sond' light recently illuminated on my dashboard.
is this the equivlant of 'check engine soon'?
how long can this warning wait?
is there anything i can look out for or check?
is this a transmission problem?
if anyone could contribute any knowledge, it would be accepted graciously.
